  1. I just watched Fargo again the other day. It starts with a screenful of text that says this is based on actual events and the names of the survivors have been changed to protect their identities. In one of the DVD special features William H. Macy says that during the second or third week of filming he asked the directors to tell him about the murders. They said, “What are you talking about? We made the whole thing up.” Macy said, “But you can’t say it’s based on a true story if it didn’t really happen!” And the Coen brothers replied, “You can say whatever you want in a work of fiction.”
