October 24:
We attended an “event geocache” today. The event was to rent a boat and search for a bunch of traditional geocaches in the Thousand Islands. It was lots of fun. [on the deck, in the cabin, osprey nest, found one!, another osprey nest, stopping to refuel]
Our favourite island was Mermaid Island, which we thought was very pretty. It is quite close to shore and there is supposed to be deep water swimming there (no weeds to grab your feet!), so we thought we might like to rent a canoe in the summer and return for a picnic.
Celine was very excited to visit all these beautiful places and when everybody else was busy looking at the plastic toys in the caches she would go off exploring the islands. [whaleback, orange lichen, wooden bridge]
One of the other geocachers who came to the event brought me some army field rations to try. I think it is traditional to bring small presents to hand out at these events, and he was responding to a question I had asked in the mailing list about a meal nicknamed “The Lung.” He didn’t bring that one though. (Whew!) Celine thought the meal was a bit spooky.
October 30:
Celine, Christine, and I went for a hike to see the fall colours. [leaning, raindrops].
October 31:
The Rideau Trail Association opened a new trail and somebody promptly hid a new geocache on it, so Celine and I went out to see. [leaves, rocks, juniper, cliff top, stylish hair-do].
Celine bought some squash from the infamous gourd stall in Prince Edward County. We used the orange one for a soup and the blue one for a pie. I really like squash.

I should be doing homework right now, but I needed a break. I still haven’t gotten used to the workload of being a third year university student. I’ll manage to slog through it somehow, though. Hopefully I’ll get more used to the routine before next term starts.
October 9: Peter and Gina came up for Thanksgiving. We drove to Prince Edward County and visited The Grange vineyard. We tasted what they had to offer and walked around a bit on the grounds, which were pretty. They had picked a lot of grapes the night before and were crushing them with some fancy grape-crushing equipment. Not as romantic as stomping on them barefoot in a barrel, but I guess I wouldn’t want to drink foot wine anyway.
October 10: Christine cooked Thanksgiving dinner by herself this year. It was very good. She made an especially nice chocolate torte for dessert. We spent the evening hanging out and talking, and we watched a couple episodes of Trailer Park Boys. Peter liked Doug’s MoMo wheels from Italy. Celine and I had fun trying to take pictures of each other’s cameras as the flashes were going off.
October 16: I moved to a new floor in the residence. A couple of hooligans had moved in next to me on the 14th floor and I realized that I was staying on a floor where smoking is permitted. Now I’m on the 16th floor.
October 23: Christine, Celine, and I went to Lemoine Point to walk around and enjoy the fall colours. We also picked up the GeoPoker container and moved it to RMC. We had never been to this part of the campus before and we enjoyed the view and the local history. I should come back here some time when the museum is open.

I just realized that part of this web page is unreadable when you view it with Netscape (at least with the versions of Netscape installed at the computer lab at school). I’ll fix it when I can. Probably in the next week or so. In the meantime, Mozilla, Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer all seem to work.
Today there is a booth in the lobby of the computer science building where they are immunizing people against meningitis for $90 a shot. I wonder if computer scientists have a higher risk of getting meningitis. Maybe it has something to do with Captain Kirk, who had it once.
I have many tests this week. And assignments due. All my base are belong to them.

On the Sunday I had discovered the vandalism, Ma and Pa spoke with the contractor, Garofalo, and the police. Garofalo responded promptly and had the hole fixed up first thing Monday. They also finished the chimney so as to prohibit further entrance by unexpected “guest”. Besides damaging the wall the intruders moved things about, took the light bulbs and battery charger. This did not stop the progress in getting the light fixtures installed. Having the outside lights on at night makes the place more lived in and easier to check on while I patrol it every night after work. What else? The stove fan is installed and they sealed the staircase drywall.
